Texting and driving. Is it really that bad?

Test Messaging And Driving Are Hazardous To Your Health:
A Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study called for a law prohibiting text messaging while driving, concluding that doing both at the same time can increase the risk of a crash by 23 times.

The VTTIs study, which surveyed drivers over six million miles of road, found that manual manipulation of cell phones, such as dialing and text messaging, produced the highest risk for drivers of all vehicle types. Text messaging, however, was deemed the most dangerous of all cell phone-related activity, leading to a 23-fold risk of a crash for drivers of heavy vehicles or trucks.

Sprint Nextel bought Virgin Mobile USA

Sprint Nextel, the third-largest US mobile network operator, unveiled a $420m deal on Tuesday to acquire Virgin Mobile USA, the wireless phone company in which Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group is the largest shareholder.

The all-stock deal valued Virgin Mobile USA’s equity at $5.50 per share, representing a 31 per cent premium to its closing price on Monday.

The transaction represents a further retreat from the mobile phone market for Sir Richard’s Virgin group. Virgin began establishing mobile businesses in the 1990s but since 2006 it has sold equity stakes in Australia, the UK and Canada. It is focusing on its mobile operations in India, France and South Africa.

Sprint has been struggling to stem customer defections from its core post-paid mobile business following a disastrous $36bn merger with Nextel in 2005.

Cell Phone History

I know everybody is using cell phones, but did you know where they came from and who invint5ed them? to read more click here.

New Technology in Cellular Market.

Vtech has released Bluetooth cordless phones in the past, but it says its new LS6245 is the "first system of its kind capable of connecting landline and cellular phone calls simultaneously."

Like most new cordless phones these days, the LS6245 is a DECT 6.0 model, but the key feature here is the capability to pair your Bluetooth cell phone with the unit and take calls on either the slim handset or via the built-in speakerphone. VTech is calling it "a virtual two-line phone system," and says you cannot only take a landline call and cell phone call at the same time, but you can actually connect two cell phones to the LS6245 at once (you can pair up to eight Bluetooth-enabled devices to it).

The base system costs $79.95 and comes with a digital answering machine and a single handset. You can add up to 12 handsets (model LS6204) to the system and you can make cell calls from any of the handsets throughout your house, so long as your cell phone is paired with the base station. Additional handsets cost $39.95 each.
